Unsentenced prisoners
At 30 June, 2016:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners accounted for 27% (3,221 prisoners) of all unsentenced prisoners nationally. (Table 8)
- The most common charge for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners was acts intended to cause injury (42% or 1,346 prisoners), followed by unlawful entry with intent (13% or 432 prisoners). For non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners the most common charge was acts intended to cause injury (25% or 2,197 prisoners), followed by illicit drug offences (20% or 1,736 prisoners). (Table 8)
- The median time spent on remand by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners was 2.4 months, compared to 3.1 months for non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners. Time on remand as reported in the Prisoner Census is time on remand to date as at 30 June 2016, and not the total time spent on remand. Time on remand is influenced by a number of factors, particularly the time it takes for a case to come before a court. (Table 12)
